Green Roads Ahead: Low Impact Development for Sustainable Stormwater Management in York Region

Wednesday, March 26, 2025 | 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. | Hall A

ABSTRACT

This study presents a case study of Low Impact Development (LID) facilities for stormwater management in urban roadways by AtkinsRéalis Roads, Bridges, and Municipal Engineering group.

The case study was conducted as part of 16th Avenue Road improvement project with the Regional Municipality of York in Markham, Ontario.

LID refers to facilities that mimic the natural water cycles through various processes such as infiltration, evapotranspiration, etc. In existing condition, there were no LID features within the project area.

To implement LIDs within the road corridor, various types of LID facilities were evaluated. Due to the multiple constraints encountered related to the design, construction, and monitoring of the LID facilities, only certain types of LIDs were suitable to meet the required water quantity, quality, and water balance criteria set out by the government agencies.

The final design involves adopting a treatment train approach where multiple LIDs were used in series to meet the design requirements.

The purpose of this study is to share the lessons learned from this road improvement project, particularly in terms of the suitability of various types of LIDs and the effectiveness of LIDs in contributing to the sustainable transportation infrastructure.
