TRACK 1, DAY 2

Designing for System Longevity in Green Infrastructure: Urban Ecology and Community

Thursday, March 27, 2025 | 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. | Hall A

ABSTRACT

Green Rainwater Infrastructure are highly engineered systems that take a lot of planning, grading, sizing and technical specifications.

Equal to the engineering is the consideration of the living elements of a system. Namely, plants and soil. The world of living systems is far more nuanced that calculations cannot solve.

We are determined to crack the code of bioretention longevity through creating healthy, functional ecosystems where the plants and soil will thrive.

We will share on the efforts made in Vancouver to enhance the longevity of living systems:

– Soil inoculation and Soil Specifications
– Ethnobotany consultancy
– Planting communities and tightness
– Bioblitz and community science to inform planting
– Ensuring biodiversity and pollinator habitat
– Micro grants and community engagement
