Replacing Ponds with LIDs: Performance of the First LID Subdivision in the City of Brampton

ABSTRACT
The City of Brampton and Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) have monitored the performance of the first-ever LID subdivision in Brampton for 6 years.
All stormwater runoff in the subdivision is managed on-site through a variety of LID practices, including an infiltration trench, bioswale, rain gardens, and permeable pavement driveways instead of a conventional wet pond.
Results show that the LIDs in combination with Oil Grit Separators are reducing TSS by over 80% and peak flows below pre-development levels up to and including the 50-year storm.
Water balance and erosion control performance is limited by the frequency of a high groundwater table reaching the base elevation of the infiltration trench, suggesting that designers need to consider a more extensive pre-development groundwater monitoring approach and use an integrated groundwater and surface-water flow model to better characterize pre-development site hydrogeology, as well as select best suited locations for LID features.
Design storm analysis suggests that the influence of groundwater is negligible for rate control during larger return period events because the bioswale, which provides most of the quantity control for the subdivision, is not impacted by groundwater.
