Overcoming Barriers for Successful SWM Pond Inspection and Maintenance for Municipalities in the Lake Simcoe Watershed and Elsewhere in Ontario
Wednesday March 25, 2020
1:00 to 1:30 p.m. (Hall F)
Steve Auger, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority
Tim Krsul, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks
This presentation will highlight the collaborative efforts of Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) to address stormwater management (SWM) pond inspection, maintenance, and monitoring barriers identified by Lake Simcoe watershed municipalities.
It will also discuss opportunities, including best practices, training, and/or revised prioritization methods that municipalities are encouraged to use to overcome these obstacles.
The overall objective for this project is to support municipalities with improving their SWM pond inspection, maintenance, and monitoring methods to ensure these features are functioning effectively and protecting valued ecosystem components and public safety.
The prioritization methodology to be presented remains malleable and allows for adaptation to suit the needs of each Municipality within the recommended evaluation criteria, sub criteria, and associated weighting. Additional categories may also be added as needed.
1. Understand how improvements to SWM pond inspection maintenance methods will support the features functioning more effectively, while prolonging lifespan.
2. Learn about next step plans, including adapting the SWM Pond inspection and maintenance training for delivery in other jurisdictions in Ontario, based on interest expressed.
3. Learn how prioritization methodology will support municipalities with limited resourcing to address maintenance and repair where feasible.
